The DReam

A combination of things brought this song to life rather quickly. It was a year ago February (Black History Month), when I was inspired by the poem, ‘As I Grew Older‘ by Langston Hughes. The softening of time touched a nerve within me and I felt the need to comment on it, and so I did.

Musically as 2022 arrived I had been taking a deep dive into the organ trio Blicher, Hemmer, Gadd and their album, ‘Omara.’ Recalling a season quite a way back where I played 300 some dates in an organ trio, this arrangement became an outcome of the many smoke filled nights from that different world. I truly believe that when we write, perform, and listen to music it seeps deep into our soul and often needs some time to brew down there before creatively rising up in a new form.

The studio process was seamless, it really was uneventful other than my rather large grin that continued to grow through the sessions. There’s no excess on the whole Trio project, just the essentials.

I should add as a clarification that I included the DR in the title, ‘The DReam’ to honor Dr. Martin Luther King.

Lyrics:
A long, long time ago
So long ago I’ve forgotten
A notion filled my mind
A dream divinely begotten
But suddenly a distance appeared
Vanquished, the dream disappeared

A long, long shadow
Grew ever longer every day
In the darkness I struggled
Contentious in my way
But nothing by chance impressed
The dream dimmed and was suppressed

My credence, my steadfast credence
Strengthened my enchanted moonbeam
My journey will not be abandoned
Providence will shelter the dream

A long, long tomorrow
As long as the aim can see
Good fortune will indwell me
I’ve been reassured lovingly
That in the cards works a love supreme
A love that’ll ascertain the dream

Love Strands

3AB781BA-DA42-41C7-9280-1B3A82A0D570

Love Strands drops on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2020. It’s a collection of gospel-tinged songs that live in a blues neighborhood. All twelve tracks are culturally and spiritually inspired. I’ve really enjoyed recording and introducing the songs over the past few months. It’s my prayer that they would bring some comfort and clarity to those who hear them.

Rambling through my favor
Tempered to the thrill
Mulish by my manner
Your love bent my will

February Notes

#LS Cover* 1Besides the release of the Love Strands album, I’ve found myself settling into my southern digs, and designing a creative nest in which to continue writing and recording.

The calendar is sparse until the spring as my wife (Susan) and I enjoy our little beach community. Fortunately for us, it’s a little haven of spiritual inspiration. There are numerous strands of love that flow throughout the days and nights here, we count ourselves blessed on a daily basis!

Now go, and play nice!

Deliver Me

Bible-Guitar banner Logo

Hi Friends,

This week marks the release of an album of prayers called Endurance. Mankind has been singing prayers to God from the beginning of time, and so it continues with this offering. The prayer below is from the collection and is entitled Deliver Me.

O Lord, that I may live
That I may live and breathe, childlike
That I may see through the veil
That I would be dewy-eyed
Deliver me
Deliver me from myself

Pour upon me the cleansing love
That flows to self forgetfulness
Lay upon me the hands of healing
That touch a soul of meekness

O Lord, forgive my ways
Forgive my scanty and meager ways
Deliver me
Deliver me from myself

O Lord, hear my prayer
Hear my prayer of lost and weakness
Hear my pray, hear my prayer
Hear what burdens lay heavy on my heart
Hear the voice that speaks from deep in my soul
Deliver me
Deliver me from myself

~ Eddy Mann

Friday, May 03, 2019 is the release date for the Endurance album. This collection of prayers has been on the back burner for seven years, and now they can finally breathe and have life. This is a quiet release in that I’ve not made a big splash about it’s drop date. I know that this offering will not be for everyone, but for those of you who are fond of mediative prayer, my hope is that you can experience a deeper and more meaningful moment through these expressions of faith.

May’s song, Deliver Me, is the second featured song from the project. The lyric above is self explanatory so there’s no need for me to elaborate any more other than to say that it reflects a moment of prayer, the conversation, on my end, as it happened.

As I’ve been sharing what I’m reading this year, last month’s book was called The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel. I was taken with the in-depth look at what the Sabbath means to the Jewish community, and how I might grow to have a more profound sense of the day. I loved this quote, “The meaning of the Sabbath is to celebrate time rather than space… to turn from the results of creation to the mystery of creation.”

I’m looking forward to getting into rehearsals for the summer run. Live dates begin the first weekend in June at Karen’s Place, in Doylestown, PA. I can’t wait to see you all!

Holding on to You

Bible-Guitar banner Logo

Hi Friends,

Mankind has been singing prayers to God from the beginning of time, and so it is that this month I offer a prayer in song from a new collection called Endurance.

I’ve known of your love
And I hunger for more
Broke without grace
I’m knocking at your door

Love I long to know
Sharpen and refine
Lost without you
Oh, for love divine

I’m holding on to you
I’m holding on to you

Begin anew in me
Speak to my soul
Strength to rise
Hear my prayers of ol’

When I’m hurt by the harshness
When this cold world is heartless
All through the darkness
I’m holding on to you

 April Notebook

Eddy-Mann-Logo-2L 850x850

It’s life’s hills and valleys that tend to define our journey. This month I find myself back in my northern digs. This change of location is six weeks early, but loving relationships require a flexible calendar. My father-in-law took ill while we were down south and coming north was the right compassionate thing to do. So here we are, not particularly happy with the weather, but still relishing in the blessings that spring has to offer.

April’s song, Holding On To You, is the first of a collection of sung prayers that I’ll be releasing over the next few months. The collection is called Endurance and was written back in 2011. Through God’s timing it appears that now is the time to share them with you.

This past month I started reading a book called ‘The Master’s Men‘ by William Barclay. It’s not new, it was originally published in 1959 and I’m reading a 1985 edition. It was recommended to me as a character study of the Apostles. So far I’ve really enjoyed a deeper understanding of the part each disciple played in the Jesus story.

Please continue to enjoy ‘The State of MannSpotify playlist, and keep a watch out for the Homeward Bound series on facebook, twitter and instagram.

King of Creation

E.M. 2018 Banner - Logo

Hi Friends,

My prayer is that this months’s song will comfort and strengthen you as you continue along your journey.

Beautiful Savior
King of Creation
Son of God and Son of Man
Truly I’d love Thee
Trust I’d serve Thee
Light of my soul, my Joy, my Crown

Fair are the meadows
Fair are the woodlands
Robed in flowers of blooming spring
Jesus is fairer
Jesus is purer
He makes our sorrowing spirit sing

King of Creation
We praise Your name

Beautiful Savior
Lord of the nations
Son of God and Son of Man
Glory and honor
Praise adoration
Now and forevermore be Thine

 March Notebook

The new month includes some time in Key West to catch up with the family Conchs that I haven’t seen in a few years. And the road down will allow for a visit with an artist friend which prayerfully will bear fruit in the form of a live or future in studio podcast. Stay tuned!

I’ve created a Spotify playlist that shares my ever changing soundscape called ‘The State of Mann.’ Please feel free to join me by following it. On my reading list this past month has been Margaret Feinberg’s ‘Taste and See,’ a global culinary and spiritual adventure in discovering God among butchers, bakers, and fresh food makers, that to this point has been a savoring experience.

Homeward Bound will continue as the Spirit moves. Our journeys at times can seem so isolated, but what we’re experiencing is communal in that at one time or another we’re all walking the same path and being guided by the same loving hands. So please continue to keep an eye out on facebook, twitter and instagram as these events unfold, and as always share how the Spirit moves you.

He Remembers

E.M. 2018 Banner - Logo

Hi Friends,

I’m releasing a new single today called ‘He Remembers.’ It was written back in the spring of 2016 and was inspired by a quote from novelist Elise Wisel, ‘God is God because He remembers.’ A free download is available at eddymann.com.

He remembers my first breath of air
He remembers because He was there
And still my Maker is with me everywhere
He remembers and He’s with me now

He remembers the first word I said
He remembers what I turned and fled
And still my Father never turned His head
He remembers and He’s with me now

He knows my pulse and the pulse of everything
Every moment ever lived and each created thing
He knows my name and the thoughts that cross my mind
He knows my heart, and the heart of all mankind

He remembers every tear I’ve sown
He remembers when I felt alone
And still my savior has never left me on my own
He remembers and He’s with me now
~ Eddy Mann

 February Notebook

Eddy-Mann-Logo-2L 850x850Well as January ends I’ve settled into my southern digs and have found a relaxed atmosphere to work and play. There’ll continue to be some new music appearing in the next few months as I’m just finishing up some mixing and art work. Inspiration is everywhere here so I don’t suspect that there’ll be a slow down in the offerings.

Of note is that I just finished reading an interesting book called Jesus Asked by Conrad Gempf. It’s a relatively short read, but it opened up some interesting new images for me, like if Jesus were to meet you on the street today he’d be more likely ask you something rather than tell you something. And in response I’ve actually answered a few questions with questions of my own lately.

My newest ministry Homeward Bound has been providing some energetic feedback which is encouraging. The spontaneity of it will take some time to get use to, and the broad avenues of sharing will also be an adjustment to handle. My hope was that this could reach many of you who are at a distance from me, and or don’t have the means to participate at an event in person. It’s my prayer that the live pop-up events will continue to grow in freedom and transparency. And yes, from time to time I may be able to invite some of you to be in house. So continue to keep an eye out on facebook, twitter and instagram as these events journey on.

Unbreakable

f1e4b-back2bcover2bpic2b1a2bbanner

Hi Friends,

I’m writing this from a barrier island in South Florida and can’t help but appreciate the blessings in my life. It’s amazing to me how we grow unaware of the grace that’s poured out into our lives everyday.

We live a life of blind abundance, surrounded by the most astonishing love.

This month is the seventh anniversary of a song that I wrote on Valentine’s Eve back in 2011. At the time my life was a collection of colliding calls. Musician, teacher, worship leader, coach, father, husband, son… the list was endless and so were my days.

It’s the only time in my twenty-seven plus years of marriage that I forgot, or rather put off, a Valentine’s gift. So as the hour drew late on that winter night I prayed for some divine help in creating something special for my wife.

Prayer led me to Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Inspired by the verse I wrote the song Unbreakable. It may be the most loving gift that I ever gave my wife, and it God’s word that inspired it. In truth, it’s the reason that we have the marriage that we do.

My God, my wife, and myself
Together we’ve weathered whatever’s been dealt
Cause together we’re unbreakable ~ E.M.

Three’s not a crowd, it’s an unbreakable cord.

Call me, text me, tweet me, message me, email me, write me… we’ve been brought together by God for a reason.

As always, remember you can send an anonymous email to prayer@eddymann.com for prayers and encouragement.

February Notebook

Eddy-Mann-Logo-2L 850x850February looks to be a pretty quiet month for me. At least that’s my plan. I’ve settled into a creative niche that allows me to read, write, and pray.

I’ve been ever mindful of recognizing how I need to re-energize, re-focus and re-charge both musically and spiritually.

Looking ahead a bit, only sparingly 🙂 …March 6, 2018 marks the Pre-Release date for my new album Simple Things. I’ve touched on this a little over the past year. It’s an album of songs that were inspired by Philly artist Thomas Eakins. The album will have a release date in early April and I’ll be back supporting it both solo and with the band come spring.
